Red Devils unable to repeat last year's ousting of Morton

October 28, 2010
By BILL STONE bstone@pioneerlocal.com

SOCCER-- Hinsdale Central starting senior defender and co-captain Andrew Worthington perfectly summarized Friday's 1-0 double-overtime loss to top-seeded Morton in the Class 3A Morton Regional final.

"Morton had their chances. We had our chances. No regrets," Worthington said.

"It stinks to lose. It's tough to go out. But there's not really a better way than that. It was a fantastic season and we played a fantastic game. Morton was a handful. I played my best. Unfortunately, we didn't come out with the result."

In an instant, the Red Devils' season of progress with a relatively young lineup came to an end when Morton's Ivan Chavez scored with 7 minutes, 52 seconds left in the second of four 10-minute sudden-death periods. Had the game remained scoreless after 120 minutes, penalty kicks would have decided the victor.

The Red Devils (11-8-2), the No. 7 seed in the Argo Sectional, eliminated the Mustangs 1-0 in last year's regional final with a goal in the first overtime. Chavez scored for Morton (20-3-3) by rebounding Joel Salmeron's shot after the Red Devils cleared a ball at the side of their goal into the center area.

"I thought we were terrific today, so it's too bad (to have lost)," Hinsdale Central coach Mike Wiggins said. "They're everything we thought they'd be. Credit to (Morton) because they earned it. I could probably tell you without reservation that we would not be looking at a 0-0 game with Morton if you're looking at the first four weeks of (our) season. Our guys really had to reach deep down and give everything they've got to hang with a team that was very, very good."

The Red Devils almost won. In the 82nd minute, sophomore Phil Gutman nearly scored a golden goal off a throw-in by senior Taylor Cole, but the uncontested shot in the crease went just over the crossbar. Cole had a shot on goal just 15 seconds into the second overtime. The Red Devils also had the better of the play throughout the opening 20 minutes.

"We can point to a number of times throughout the game where it could have gone either way," Wiggins said. "I thought there were stretches of time where we were giving it to them and I thought there were stretches where we were hanging on. It's funny how the game plays out that way."

The Red Devils bring back eight starters from a team that started 6-6, including goalie Will Meyer and midfielder Mitch Reavis as junior co-captains. They will graduate the anchors of the defensive line in Worthington and Mike Oleferchik and midfielder and co-captain Taylor Cole, a four-year starter and the only remaining member of the fourth-place Class AA team from 2007.

"Our team motto was hard work beats talent if talent fails to work hard. We knew if we worked hard, we could beat any team on any given day," Worthington said. "If the junior class takes what they learned this year and apply it, they have a lot to look forward to. I hope we (seniors) did our job leading by example."

Hinsdale Central beat No. 10 Argo 3-1 in the regional semifinals Oct. 20.

Junior midfielder Gareth Parsons tied the game 4:22 before halftime after Reavis flicked along Oleferchik's free kick. With 35:14 left, Reavis scored the game winner with an open blast from the center of the box off a pass by Parsons. It was Reavis' first game since being injured at York Oct. 5.

Lenny Zavala added a goal with 23:30 left off Worthington's boot into the box. Meyer kept the Red Devils ahead by pushing the Argonauts' only second-half shot on goal over the crossbar with 31 minutes left.

Devils make cut in regional opener

October 21, 2010
By BILL STONE bstone@pioneerlocal.com

SOCCER -- Junior midfielder Gareth Parsons was among the Hinsdale Central players who cut his hair short Saturday in preparation for the Class 3A state playoffs.

“We kind of decided to do it as a team. Although some people didn't, most of us decided,” Parsons said.

The Red Devils nearly had a close shave in Wednesday's Class 3A Morton Regional opener after allowing an early goal to Argo, but Parsons and junior midfielder Mitch Reavis helped them rally for a 3-1 victory.

Hinsdale Central (11-7-2) the No. 7 seed in the Argo Sectional, will play the top-seeded host Mustangs (19-3-3) for the regional championship at 4 p.m. Friday.

Parsons tied the game 4:22 before halftime after Reavis flicked along Mike Oleferchik's free kick. With 35:14 left, Reavis scored what proved to be the game winner with an open blast from the center of the box off a pass by Parsons. It was Reavis' first game since being injured at York Oct. 5.

“(Reavis) was calling for it. We did that a lot in training, crossing and stuff so I knew where he was going to be,” Parsons said.

“He assisted me and I assisted him. It was pretty good. (My goal) was a bad shot, but it went over (the goalie's) head. It picked us up a little bit because letting up an early goal is never nice. It was good to get on the board.”

The Red Devils' Lenny Zavala added a goal with 23:30 left off Andrew Worthington's boot into the box. Goalie Will Meyer kept the Red Devils ahead by pushing the No. 10-seeded Argonauts' only second-half shot on goal with 31 minutes left over the crossbar.

Hinsdale Central gains confidence with upset of Downers Grove North

October 19, 2010
By BILL STONE bstone@pioneerlocal.com

SOCCER-- Hinsdale Central once again looks as if it will be peaking at IHSA state-tournament time.

"We're really excited and hoping to build on the successes, and learn from the bad things that happened. Apply all that and get it done in the playoffs," Hinsdale Central senior defender Mike Oleferchik said.

The Red Devils garnered momentum Oct. 12 when they surprised area-ranked Downers Grove North 2-1 in Hinsdale in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play.

Downers North was coming off a 4-3 victory Oct. 2 at Morton, the No. 1 seed in the Class 3A Argo Sectional and the seventh-seeded Red Devils' opponent at 4 p.m. Friday in Berwyn for the regional title if they won Wednesday's opener against No. 10 Argo.

"That was a really big one (to win) for sure," Oleferchik said. "I think the whole team made a lot of good decisions with passing. We had a lot of good anticipation on the field, and Will Meyer had a really good game in goal."

Adam Chiramonte scored the winning goal for the Red Devils (10-7-2, 3-3) with 32 minutes, 31 seconds left off a cross by Philip Gutman.

Oleferchik and the defense shut down Downers North standout Paul Hogan, who averages more than a goal per game. A.J. Jeffries converted the penalty kick after he was fouled.

Oleferchik gave the Red Devils a 1-0 lead by scoring on a free kick from 30 yards. The Trojans (15-4-2, 3-3) tied the game later in the first half.

"It was funny because (Hinsdale Central head coach Mike Wiggins) was saying the day before at practice I couldn't hit a ball to save my life, and I came out and put that in, and it was uplifting," Oleferchik said. "It was definitely a confidence booster to score that one."

On Oct. 13, the Red Devils fell 2-1 at Glenbard West by losing 4-2 in penalty kicks. The game had been suspended on account of darkness Oct. 7 with the game tied 1-1 after the first of two 10-minute sudden-death overtimes. The defeat left the Red Devils tied for third with Downers North and York.

The Red Devils tied Addison Trail 2-2 in their regular-season finale Oct. 14. Oleferchik, moved to outside midfield during the game, assisted the tying goal by Taylor Cole, who just returned to the lineup. Gareth Parsons also scored following a sideline throw-in.

Hinsdale Central roundup: Red Devils earn costly victory

October 12, 2010

SOCCER-- Hinsdale Central paid the price for an impressive West Suburban Conference Silver Division victory Oct. 5.

Three starters were on the sidelines with injuries Oct. 7 at Glenbard West after the Red Devils' 4-0 victory at York two days earlier.

Goalie Will Meyer (ankle), Taylor Cole (hip) and Mitch Reavis (ankle) joined Andrew Scott (back) on the sidelines as the Red Devils and Glenbard West remained tied 1-1 after one 10-minute sudden-death overtime period before the game was called because of darkness. It was scheduled to be completed Wednesday.

The game's start was delayed about 30 minutes because the Red Devils' bus arrived late. Reavis had just been cleared to return playing after receiving staples in his head going for a headball against Sandburg Oct. 1.

"We're not in any hurry to get guys back. We're one day at a time, one doctor's note at a time and we'll look to what the next seven-to-10 days look like," Hinsdale Central coach Mike Wiggins said. "(The York game) was about as physical game as I've ever seen."

Hinsdale Central (9-6, 2-2 in Silver) tied the game with 20 minutes, 41 seconds left in the first half as an unmarked defender Andrew Worthington on the far post tapped in Gareth Parsons' free kick from along the left sideline.

Glenbard West (3-10-5, 0-4) scored first amid controversy when Mike Paravola converted a direct kick from just outside the box after the Red Devils believed it was an indirect kick and had no time to adjust.

"I'm not happy about it, an official holding his arm up, indicating an indirect kick, which impacts how we organize ourselves defensively," Wiggins said. "No one's disputing that it wasn't a direct kick but when you put your arm up and saying that it's indirect, that's a problem."

Lyons Township maintains Silver Brick

September 28, 2010
By KEN RYAN kryan@pioneerlocal.com

SOCCER-- Lyons Township senior Kyle Kurfirst has been in enough games against rival Hinsdale Central to know the game is never over until the final seconds tick off the clock.

So he wasn't surprised by the exciting turn of events late in Tuesday's key West Suburban Conference Silver Division showdown in Hinsdale.

Just 28 seconds after Hinsdale Central evened the score, Kurfirst scored off an unbelievable header with 4 minutes, 15 seconds remaining in regulation to give LT a thrilling 3-2 victory.

"This is a big win," a calm and collected Kurfirst said moments after the victory. "This has always been a huge rivalry. No matter what the situation going in, you always get the best from each team. The energy was up on both sides. It's just a good result for the team. Obviously, I was happy that I was able to help the team today, but getting the win is what matters most."

Hinsdale Central senior Taylor Cole, who is as familiar with the rivalry as anyone as a four-year starter, sent the home crowd into a frenzy when he scored off a header with 4:43 left to even the score at 2-2.

The lead didn't last long, however, when LT sophomore Jack Thomas headed a pass to Kurfirst, who sent a header of his own into the upper right-hand corner of the net off a tough angle for the game-winner.

"I went from really excited to just mad and disappointed," Cole said. "They're always tough. We just got unlucky in the end and shouldn't have given up that goal in the end."

LT (11-1-2, 3-0 in Silver) was presented with a Silver Brick that is given annually to the winner of the conference game between the two teams.

The series that dates back to 1975 is now even at 19-19-4. LT won 3-0 last year and then rallied twice to pull out a 3-2 win in the sectional final en route to winning the program's first state championship.

"To describe emotions is not doing justice to what is so great about this rivalry," Hinsdale Central coach Mike Wiggins said. "It's just great for the kids. Everything that goes into this game from records, to previous matches and anything leading up to today's date really just goes out the window. What a great game, well played on both sides. LT is fantastic. I felt there were more than moments in time where we had the run of play. We battled back and all in all for our guys we did extremely well. It's just a shame we couldn't hold off that third goal. What a gutsy game by Taylor Cole to just really step up his level of play and hat's off to Kurfirst for scoring that goal."

LT led 2-1 after an action-packed first half.

The Lions struck first when Kurfirst headed in a ball off an assist from Peter Kralovec-Kirchherr that the Red Devils weren't able to clear in front of the goal.

Hinsdale Central (6-6, 1-2 in Silver), which has lost three straight and five of its last six games, answered just 3:42 later when Cole took a pass from Lenny Zavala on the right side and crossed a shot past diving LT goalkeeper Kevin Beglen (5 saves) to even the score at 1-1.

LT regained the lead with 14:45 remaining in the opening half when sophomore Brett Heimerdinger knocked the ball into the back of the net off an assist from Kurfirst to make the score 2-1.

That's where the score remained until the exciting final five minutes of the contest.

LT coach Paul Labbato wasn't fazed by Hinsdale Central's late tying goal.

"I don't react anymore," Labbato said. "It's the rivalry and we're not going to have a blowout with this team on most occasions. Hats off to our guys to take the kick off come down and get what may have been one of the best goals I've seen this year. This is a big game for our kids with the brick, the rivalry and the (sectional) seeding."

LT was coming off an impressive 1-0 win over Marquette Park University High School Saturday in Milwaukee, Wis.

Horacio Sanchez scored the lone goal of the game for the Lions, while Beglen made seven saves to get the shutout.

LT beat Glenbard West 3-0 Sept. 23 in a Silver contest. Kurfirst, Sanchez and Sean Davy each had a goal for the Lions. Max Hadley and Jeremiah Enright combined on the shutout.

Hinsdale Central lost to Naperville Central 3-2 Saturday in Hinsdale on a goal in the final minute and 2-1 to visiting Oak Park-River Forest in Silver action Sept. 21.

The game against OPRF was ended prematurely by lightning with about 10 minutes left. The Red Devils took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Andrew Worthington scored off a free kick by Gareth Parsons.

Against Naperville Central, the Red Devils took a 1-0 halftime lead as defender Worthington used his height to knock in a free kick by Mike Oleferchik. Another Oleferchik free kick resulted in a goal by Lenny Zavala for a 2-1 lead.

Film room pays dividends for young Devils

September 7, 2010
By BILL STONE bstone@pioneerlocal.com

BOYS SOCCER-- Senior Andrew Worthington wants to provide leadership for Hinsdale Central this season as a team captain.

"Just leading by example, hard work, talking to everybody, communicating, always standing up, working hard in practice. That's the most important one, always giving 100 percent in practice," Worthington said.

With just four returning starters from last year's IHSA Class 3A Sweet-16 finisher, the Red Devils have many areas to grow.

They took a big step on Sept. 1 without even touching a soccer ball. The mission was to learn by watching film of the previous day's 2-1 loss to rival Hinsdale in Red Group action of the annual Red Devil Cup.

The immediate result was a 3-1 victory over Oswego East Sept. 2.

"We watched a lot. We learned a lot. It was a bit demoralizing. It showed us we can't look past anybody," Worthington said. "(The Oswego East game) was a huge turnaround for us. We think we've got down the right mindset. Now all we have to do is (to) mimic it for every single game."

The Red Devils (4-1) cost themselves a chance to play in Saturday afternoon's championship game against Morton (4-0-1) by losing to Hinsdale South (2-3-1) for the second straight year.

In Saturday's group finales, the Red Devils beat Lincoln-Way East 3-1 while Hinsdale South lost at Oswego East 4-1. The Red Devils and Hornets tied for first in the group with 2-1 records, but the Hornets advanced based on head-to-head record. Morton won the championship match 6-0.

The Red Devils played technically sound in a 2-1 victory Aug. 28 at Tremper (Kenosha, Wis.), even with three players out of position and four-year starter Taylor Cole leaving with a slight hip injury that kept him out of last week's action.

"For the most part, we saw a different attitude (Sept. 2), a different approach, a remarkable difference in (winning) balls in the air," Hinsdale Central head coach Mike Wiggins said. "It was two hours of film work because there was literally two hours to review, and we didn't go over everything."

Two minutes after entering as a substitute, Aaron Cheever scored first against Oswego East 15 minutes, 31 seconds before halftime. He intercepted the ball and dribbled about 30 yards unchallenged.

Gareth Parsons scored five minutes into the second half off a pass by Mark Tyler. Sophomore Connor Oleferchik made it 3-0 with 24:40 left off a corner kick by his brother, senior defender and returning starter Mike Oleferchik. Connor entered the game just before the restart.

"That was pretty exciting. He's going to be happy," Mike Oleferchik said. "This is the first time we've ever played together. It's a really special experience, me and him on the same field, and I definitely try to look for him."

Wiggins noted, "It was really just a great, great effort from everybody. Mark Tyler continues to get better and better. Andrew Worthington leads us in the back line and is doing a terrific job. We're real happy with our young guys."

Interior starters for last year's defense, Worthington and Mike Oleferchik are now side by side but with Oleferchik at left back. The team's tallest player at 6-foot-2, Worthington is moving up more this season to increase scoring options for restarts.

"Last year, we had a lot more size. This year, not so much," Worthington said. "(Oleferchik and I) played the whole entire year together, so we've got some chemistry. We're a good team. Defense is the most important thing for us at practice."

Hinsdale Central soccer team opens 2010 campaign with win

Hinsdale, IL —

Hinsdale Central's boys soccer team began the season in fine fashion on Tuesday, defeating Metea Valley 2-0 in Hinsdale.

Leondro Perez scored both goals for the Red Devils while Mitch Reavis had an assist.

"The game provided many teachable moments," said coach Mike Wiggins, "that will only help us as we look to October. Every game for us in our approach gives us feedback on how well we prepare each week. It wasn't a well played game for us from an attacking perspective. Too many turnovers but that comes with the excitement and effort from a first game."

Perez's double lifts Red Devils

August 24, 2010
BY BEN MEYER-ABBOTT

Taylor Cole and Mitch Reavis create a lot of confusion for opposing defenses. It’s Leondro Perez’s job to see through the chaos.

Perez poached rebound goals in the first and second half as his markers attempted to deal with dangerous balls into the box Tuesday in a 2-0 victory for host No. 9 Hinsdale Central over varsity-newcomer Metea Valley in the Red Devils' season opener.

“That’s me just being a forward,” said Perez, who scored in the 34th and 59th minutes. “I saw their goalies were having some trouble holding on to our hard shots and made sure I was ready to go for the rebounds.”

Midfielders Cole and Reavis also did well to find outside defenders Phillip Gutman and Mike Oleferchik making attacking runs along the sidelines throughout the game and helped to create the chances on which Perez capitalized.

“We’ve been working on the outside backs going up all week in practice,” Cole said. “With them getting forward we were able to create a lot of movement in the offensive end that [Perez] benefited from.”

Goalie Will Meyer (five saves) was impressive, corralling several high crosses for Hinsdale Central (1-0). Gabriel Gongora (save) and Derek Carothers (three saves) split time in net for Metea Valley (1-1), which suffered its first loss at the varsity level.

“We learned a little bit about the intensity and physicality of the varsity game today,” Metea Valley coach Josh Robinson said. “We did good job getting close to matching them in the second half. But [Hinsdale Central] definitely came out with a lot of pressure early that was tough for us to deal with.”

Central Soccer Preview: Expectations unchanged for young squad

August 24, 2010

• COACH: Mike Wiggins (121-55-16 in 8 seasons; 218-122-43 in 16 seasons overall)

• 2009 RESULTS: 16-7-2 overall, 5-1 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division (2nd place); lost to Lyons Township 3-2 (2 OT) in Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional final n RETURNING STARTERS: Seniors Taylor Cole, midfielder (2 goals, 8 assists in 2009); Mike Oleferchik, defender (goal, 3 assists); and Andrew Worthington, defender (assist); and junior Mitch Reavis, midfielder (6 goals, 6 assists)

• OTHER VARSITY RETURNEES: Senior Michael Hrisstov, forward (assist); and junior Will Meyer, goalie

• VARSITY NEWCOMERS: Senior Steve Gianakas, midfielder; juniors Aaron Cheever, forward; Alex Chiaramonte, defender; Zach Chiaramonte, midfielder; R.J. Dralle, defender; Gareth Parsons, forward; Leondro Perez, forward; Andrew Scott, defender; Mark Tyler, midfielder; and Killian Wagner, forward; and sophomores Phillip Gutman, defender; Mike Krohn, forward; and Connor Oleferchik, forward

• OUTLOOK: The Red Devils have a relatively young lineup in terms of varsity experience, but their expectations haven't changed for another successful season and peaking come playoff time.

Cole, Worthington, Reavis and Meyer are this year's team captains with Worthington, Reavis and Meyer also J. Kyle Braid Foundation recipients.

The season opener was scheduled for Tuesday against Metea Valley. The annual Red Devil Cup begins Aug. 31 with pool play against Hinsdale South.

"It's a hard-working group, probably the hardest working group I've had since I've been here," Wiggins said. "They don't fall short of a high energy level and spirit. They're very positive. On that end, we've been very happy. Now it's time to take that and channel it into something that'll work. We have a good group to work with so that makes for a good combination."

Last year was another perfect example of the Red Devils' plan. After losing to rival LT 3-0 Sept. 29 in the annual Silver Brick game at a packed Bennett Field, the Red Devils took LT to the limit in a memorable sectional final that was moved to Naperville North because of poor field conditions. It was the longest playoff game in the Lions' trek to their first boys soccer state championship.

Cole is a fourth-year starter, Reavis was last year's No. 2 scorer and Oleferchik and Worthington were part of another stingy defense. Meyer played in eight games, starting two, behind graduated standout Jack O'Donnell, and Hrisstov played in six games with one start before a season-ending injury.

"(Our key) is just keeping up that spirit and energy that we've showed up to this point," Wiggins said. "The way we line up now doesn't mean it's the way we'll line up at the end of the year. The goal is to be prepared at the end of the year. It's a constant assessment of the players."

Cole was second in assists last season and has career totals of four goals and 14 assists. The projected center midfielder was a key contributor in the Red Devils' 2007 fourth-place Class AA finish and 2008 state quarterfinal finish.

A third-year varsity Reavis may be counted on for more offensive punch after being second to graduated Michael Oleszkiewicz's 19 goals and five assists.

"What we're looking for from (Cole) is a leadership role more by example. We need him to demonstrate composure in stressful situations," Wiggins said. "What we need from (Reavis) is more responsibility from an attacking point of view. He's a very capable player who is going to go on and have a great future."

Defensively, Oleferchik and Worthington give the Red Devils a good base to create the best formation possible. Other early possibilities include Alex Chiaramonte and Gutman, one of four sophomores on the roster.

"Those two players (Oleferchik and Worthington) are smart enough tactically and technically to make adjustments," Wiggins said.

Going for their first Silver title since 2006, the Red Devils will be challenged by LT and area-rated Downers Grove North. The Silver Brick game versus LT is Sept. 28 at Centennial Field.

• QUOTABLE: "For this group, really just what we're looking for is a soccer personality, a style of play, and we're still looking for that," Wiggins said. "We need to get the first game out of the way for a sense of where we're at. (Assistant coach Michael Smith) and I are eager to get the first game under way to get a feeling of what the shortcomings are and where we need to move forward."
